Hi, I’m Paula - the founder of Empora.

I created this business because I know firsthand what it feels like to lose your hair, your confidence, and your sense of self. Empora is my way of empowering others through that same journey with compassion, skill, and personalised care.

Why I started Empora

I had my first Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) treatment in 2023, and honestly, it wasn’t a great experience. The results weren’t what I expected, and even after going to a second therapist, I still didn’t feel satisfied. I started thinking… there has to be a better way to do this.

Being the perfectionist I am, I started researching SMP techniques from around the world. That’s when I came across Inkd SMP. Their work was crisp, clean, and incredibly natural-looking and I loved that they also had a training school. I took the leap, signed up for their course, and completely immersed myself in learning everything I could. It was intense, but I absolutely loved it.

I knew I wanted to bring that same level of professionalism and empathy to my own clients here in New Zealand.

My own hair loss journey

In 2017, I was on holiday in the USA with my husband and children when I noticed three bald patches on my head. By the end of our six-week trip, they had grown - and my hair was noticeably thinning.

I saw a doctor, then a dermatologist, but unfortunately the few options they had for treatment were unsuccessful and there was no improvement. Over time, I tried everything I could including - diets, supplements, lotions and potions, meditation, but nothing brought my hair back.

Eventually, I made the difficult decision to shave my head. As hard as it was, shaving my head actually brought a strange sense of empowerment. I looked in the mirror and had to face a whole new version of myself.

It has been a journey mixed with many emotions but I have learnt to accept and embrace my Alopecia Totalis. This is who I am and sometimes it's empowering to be a little bit different.
